Lifestyle Aspects
The Beach The Bush
Want to get away on your own – take a break to contemplate – do something and be somewhere different - then take a bush walk or take in the expanse of the dunes and the beach. Return as often as you please or add in a swim, kayak, fish, or to relax or sunbathe. At Mimiha Ridge, the beach is as accessible as your front yard.
New Zealanders have always been drawn to the sea. Time spent with sand is a childhood memory for most of us and often in the company of our pets. It's a special place for bonding and experience with children and grandchildren. Children always find something to do on a beach!
Boating & Fishing & Diving & Hunting
The BOP abounds in seafood from shellfish including scallops, to crayfish, to plentiful white fish including snapper, trevalli, gurnard, kahawai, dory and terakihi, to larger tuna, hapuka or marlin. There are boat ramps at Thornton and Pukehina.
Trout inhabit most of the rivers, streams and lakes of the Eastern BOP. Traditionally fly fishing was preferred but boats and kayaks are also employed and local rafting businesses add other options. Whitebait run August to November and are keenly sought along the coastal streams.
Wild pigs and red deer are hunted in the bush and forests throughout the North Island.
Recreation & Activities
Golfers well catered for with over 40 clubs in the BOP but within a short distance are courses at Te Puke, Kawerau, Te Teko, Whakatane and Ohope . Most centres also have a lawn bowling club. BOP Rugby is currently headquartered at Bay Park, Bayfair which also doubles as a speedway track. There are an abundance of walking and tramping tracks in the eastern BOP.
Entertainment
While Tauranga and Mt Maunganui are the larger urban centres providing the best choice for dining, theatre, cinema, etc Whakatane should not be overlooked and has many ethnic restaurants. Sports clubs including the Sport Fishing Club are licensed and focal meeting places.
Employment
Dairy farming and its supporting services is the main local industry centred around the large factory at Edgecumbe. Horticulture, especially kiwifruit, is seasonally active based both at Te Puke and Edgecumbe. The timber mills at Kawerau (33 km) with associated geothermal power stations are also large employers. With the continued growth of Papamoa there is a demand for all building trades and associated services.
